There are two sorts of people in Brinegate—the sort who call people with magic ‘people with magic’ and the sort who call them ‘Spiders’.
Dan Lowesley has always kept his magic hidden, even from his best friend Ted. Once he graduates, Dan intends to join the Magical Division as a Warden; there, he hopes to build a future on the right side of a system that fears people like him, by using what he’s learned about his own magic to protect the city and help other magic users.
When Dan is invited to join a secret group known as the Web in the aftermath of a devastating train crash, he's presented with an opportunity that may be worth risking his future for–the chance to know and learn from others who have magic.
But the Web’s presence in the city, has not gone unnoticed; soon, the Magical Division is actively hunting them, and Ted’s cousin Julian is campaigning for magic to be more strictly regulated until a more permanent solution can be found…
As the election looms, and the city’s tenuous tolerance of magic unravels, Dan must decide just how far he's willing to go to protect his own future... and the futures of those around him.
